There are two types of breast implants–saline and silicone. CK is not a form of laser eye surgery like LASIK or PRK. Instead, during a CK procedure, a probe with a very fine needle tip is used to deliver heat energy to the eye. This energy comes in the form of radio waves. The probe is touched to the cornea and radio waves are then transmitted through it into the eye. This creates a very small amount of heat which helps to reshape the areas. The probe is touched in different spots on the eye. Eventually these small areas heal and gently tighten when doing so. This tightening helps to change the shape of the cornea, thus improving ones vision.

Each spot is carefully chosen in order to offer the best vision improvement possible. This type of refractive surgery may only have temporary effects though, so you may need additional treatment later on should your vision problems return. Conductive keratoplasty is a good choice for people who simply have trouble seeing things that are close, most often for people who are over 40 years old. Conductive keratoplasty also has extremely rare side effects and risks. It takes only a few minutes and is painless. Patients often report experiencing no discomfort at all during their CK procedure.

If you are considering refractive surgery and are over 40 with hyperopia or presbyopia, you may want to talk to your doctor about a CK procedure.

Whats the difference between PRK and LASIK?

The LASIK and PRK procedures are very similar. The defining step for each is the first step. While LASIK is characterized by the flap that is cut from the surface of the cornea, the PRK procedure does not involve flap creation. Instead the top layer of the cornea is removed completely and the cornea is shaped with an excimer laser.

Who is a Candidate for PRK?

As with any laser eye surgery, the best candidates for PRK are patients who are healthy, who have a stable refractive error, and who have a realistic expectation of their results. Patients with a history of certain eye conditions may not be good candidates for PRK. Your refractive surgeon will be able to assess your candidacy for PRK and other vision correction treatments.

What are the Common Side Effects of PRK?

As with LASIK and other refractive surgeries, many patients report pain and discomfort following PRK, which gradually subsides after a few days. Though rare, complications associated with PRK include dry eyes, glare or halos, corneal haze, scarring, and reduced vision in low light situations.

Is PRK covered by Insurance?

This procedure is sometimes performed during breast reconstruction surgery; however, many times the plastic surgeon may wait and perform this procedure once the patient has healed from breast reconstruction. If either nipple reconstruction or natural breast refinement is performed, the recovery period will be extended by a couple of weeks.

Patients who are recovering from breast reconstruction may be unhappy with the appearance of their scars. Scars are an inevitable result of breast reconstruction surgery. A skilled plastic surgeon can make sure that scars are as discrete as possible. They will also fade somewhat over time.
